andy-kim > Mt. Haleakala - We will be taking a tour of the observatories on the top of Haleakala. They have granted us special access to their awesome telescopes. 

Early Hawaiians applied the name Haleakalā ("house of the sun") to the summit area only, most likely due to the fact that from the west side of the island, the sun could be seen rising up over the eastern side of the mountain.

Haleakala is far smaller than many volcanic craters (calderas); there is an excellent chance that it is not extinct, but only dormant.
