andy-kim  > Events > 2008, April - South Africa
Andy and Kimmi went to South Africa initially for Ironman SA, but ended up enjoying Centurion where Kimmi's Operations is located; Going to a unique 5 star resort game reserve, Kariega, and staying in the Honeymoon suite for 3 days; Seeing friends Andy met on his Antarctic Marathon trip; and Kimmi participating in the pre-Ironman race, the Corporate Triathlon Challenge, which is 10% of the Ironman. We made a lot happen in a very short period of time. South Africa was both beautiful and amazing! Andy completed his 4th Ironman in 12:55 hours!

andy-kim > I found it very interesting that there was not a windshield nor a roof to the cruiser. Notice also that all you can see is bush... It was pretty amazing!
andy-kim > We jumped on the boat. Two single seats were available on the right side of the boat. The double seats were already taken by the other 2 couples. Andy sat directly behind me. The river is fed by the Indian Sea.
andy-kim > You can see the driver of the boat, who was our Ranger for the entirty of our stay. His name was Solomon. A very intelligent, knowledgeable person who knew everything about the bush, animals, stars and plants.

andy-kim > Andy stepped to the front of the boat to take pictures. I captured a few of him enjoying the view.
andy-kim > This is the cruiser we used for the three days we stayed at the resort. Some days we rode the boat to get to where it was parked and other days we parked at the resort and didn't need the boat. There wasn't much to see in the water, except some birds, since it was salt water. Therefore, once you had a boat trip, you had pretty much seen all the excitement of the water. The excitement laid waiting in the bush. Every day was very different and kept our interest.
andy-kim > Here was our first wild animal. Wild and ferocious... What do you think? In all honesty, the reserve does not feed their animals. They are free to roam and kill as nature intended. It was explained to us by our ranger not to change the profile of the cruiser. No standing in the vehicle, for example, and the animals will usually leave you alone. Although the lion is napping he is still very dangerous. There is no option to get out of the cruiser. The lion looks closer than he really is. We used zoom and then we cropped the picture when we got home.
andy-kim > We seemed to get his attention, but he lost interest quickly. This is the first of four lions we saw. He is the subordinate lion, and had recently lost his position as King. A better picture of him would show recent wounds from fighting the new King of the jungle.
